$12M Donated to Howard University by Bezos’s Ex-Wife

MacKenzie Scott, a philanthropist and author, has donated $12 million to Howard University College of Medicine. This gift is a portion of the $2.2 billion in grants that Scott has awarded to 360 organizations this year.

The College of Medicine can use the money however it sees fit. The gift will go toward creating an innovation center at the College of Medicine.

Students studying medicine and engineering will have the opportunity to learn about and create new medical technology through this center, which is working with the College of Engineering and Architecture.

The center, in the opinion of Dean Andrea A. Hayes Dixon, M.D., will assist Howard University students in becoming technological innovators in the medical field.

Scott has given to Howard University in the past. Her gift of $40 million in 2020 was the biggest single-donor contribution in the university’s history. Former Howard student Toni Morrison taught Scott, a graduate of Princeton University.

Ben Vinson III, Ph.D., president of the university, thanked Scott for her donation. He thinks the donation will draw in future medical leaders and improve the College of Medicine’s standing.
