UCLA’s Basic Needs Center Open for Students in Need, Can Pick Up Essentials and Other Items

In honor of Giving Tuesday, the UCLA Basic Needs Redistribution Centre continues to keep helping those in need in the student community.

Students can obtain free basic necessities at the Basic Needs Redistribution Centre, which is housed in Room B54 of UCLA’s Student Activities Centre basement. Students who are advocating for the cause claim that it is more important than ever.

Basic Needs Redistribution Center founder and former UCLA Student Body President Robert Watson said, “It shouldn’t be on students to provide the most essential needs to be successful at college.”

The center received the space it needed from UCLA’s administration as the students there decided to increase their own tuition in order to keep it running in 2020. According to the organizers, students are still extremely impacted by the high expense of living in Los Angeles and tuition.

Donations are accepted by the public and students. Gently used clothing donations are the most sought-after, especially items that students can wear to job interviews, according to organizers.

“It’s always jam-packed, you see a ton of students come by with their containers, ready to get some shampoo conditioner or just anything really that they need,” UCLA Student Body President Naomi Hammonds said.
