SAN DIEGO — A guy from San Diego was finally caught on Saturday after a crash on Interstate 805 that killed one person and hurt several others, according to the police. The accident shut down the northbound motorway completely, which caused traffic to be stuck for hours.
Around 8:50 a.m., just north of 43rd Street, the pile-up accident happened. The California Highway Patrol says that 27-year-old Markus Eugene Turner was driving a black Honda car when he hit a silver Toyota sedan that was stopped on the shoulder of the freeway. The cause of the accident is still being looked into.
After Turner’s car hit the first two cars, it hit a blue Honda sedan and a white Toyota sedan as well. CHP said in a press release on Monday that breaking glass also damaged a silver Nissan SUV that was close by.
Turner, two people in his car, and the driver of the blue Honda sedan were all taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that ranged from minor to major. At the same time, the driver of the silver Toyota sedan was seriously hurt and declared dead at the scene of the accident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
After Turner got medical clearance, police said he was taken on suspicion of driving while drunk. He was taken to the San Diego County Jail on several charges.
The name of the person who died has not been made public yet.
CHP officials are still looking into what caused the multi-vehicle crash and how it happened. The CHP San Diego Area office can be reached at 858-293-6000 by anyone who may have seen what happened.
