Last week, two people were arrested in North Carolina after police found fentanyl that was “potentially enough to kill 13,000 people,” according to the police.
A Facebook post from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said that Dustin McCurry, 41, and Kayly Allman, 33, were arrested on April 30 after a traffic stop in the Clear Creek Access area of South Mountains State Park. The post said that the two were arrested after deputies searched their car and found a lot of drugs inside.
According to reports, deputies found a number of drug tools and about 13.59 grammes of a crystalline substance that tested positive for methamphetamine upon arrival.
Authorities said McCurry was caught with drug tools and about 26.96 grammes of something that was thought to be fentanyl.
“In this case, the suspect, McCurry, was found in possession of over 26,000 milligrammes of fentanyl – enough to potentially kill approximately 13,000 people,” the sheriff’s agency said.
Police say that just 2 milligrammes of fentanyl can be enough to kill someone.
“The Burke County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to protecting the safety and well-being of our community by proactively addressing illegal drug activity,” the office said. “It should be noted that the estimated lethal dose of fentanyl is approximately 2 milligrammes (mg), depending on individual tolerance and the purity of the substance.”
Officials say that both Allman and McCurry were out on pretrial release at the time of the event. Because of this, neither was given a bond until the case was reviewed by a judge.
“This investigation is a powerful reminder of the severe threat fentanyl poses to public safety and highlights the critical need for ongoing vigilance and enforcement,” the police said.
