WW2 Grenade Discovered in Picayune; Cherished Possession of WW2 Veteran
Picayune, Mississippi: Last Friday, the Biloxi Bomb Squad safely handled a grenade that was brought to the Picayune Police Department.
After his grandfather passed away, Zak Barnes, a resident of Picayune, stumbled upon a surprising discovery while going through his belongings. He found a grenade securely sealed inside a plastic container.
The grenade was a cherished possession of his great-grandfather, a World War II veteran whose family claims he held onto it after it was thrown at him during combat, yet miraculously failed to detonate.
Upon conducting research, Barnes discovered that the grenade bore a striking resemblance to the Type 91 grenade, which was initially distributed to members of the Japanese Imperial Army in 1931.
Additional investigation uncovered that Type 91 grenades are filled with TNT during the assembly process, a highly volatile explosive compound that becomes more unstable as time goes on.
Due to uncertainty about the grenade’s status, the Picayune PD took precautionary measures by evacuating the vicinity of the police department on South Main Street. They are currently waiting for the Biloxi PD Bomb Squad to safely remove the device.
