MIAMI — During a Miami-Dade commission meeting on Thursday, there was a heated debate concerning immigration enforcement agreements, as well as misunderstanding over what was being discussed.
Commissioners were contemplating a state-mandated agreement that would allow the county jail to keep inmates on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Those who attended the commission meeting assumed that the commissioners were instead discussing law enforcement cooperation agreements with ICE.
They believed the commissioners were attempting to prevent them from commenting on the subject.
The item was about to be deferred, which implied that public speaking should also be postponed. But no one seemed to get it.
A woman, later named as Camila Ramos, was hauled out of the conference after loud protests about the problem.
Deputies detained Ramos, 36, of southwest Miami-Dade, for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting with violence after accused her of hitting one of them.
Another guest, Zachary Spicer, 25, of northeast Miami-Dade, was arrested for misdemeanor resisting arrest without violence.
Commission Chair Oliver Gilbert later clarified the situation.
“It does not apply to all ICE agents. It is not about rating work sites. It’s not on any of those items. “That is not before this board,” Gilbert stated. “If that were brought before this board, the problem would be positioned very differently. If I’m not mistaken, Madam Attorney, what we have in front of us is an already executed agreement.”
