Miami Standard (Manhattan Beach, CA) – The Manhattan Beach Police Department is investigating after a lady said that two people in a vehicle seized her, attempted to put a ring on her finger, and then dragged her to the ground as they drove away.
The incident occurred at noon on February 19 on the 3400 block of Palm Avenue in Manhattan Beach, according to the Police Department’s monthly crime report.
The victim called police after being robbed by two individuals in a blue vehicle. According to authorities, the victim was coming up to her driveway when the vehicle approached and the driver yelled out to her for directions.
The driver, a Middle Eastern man in his 30s or 40s, offered the victim his cellphone and urged her to speak with a translator because his English was not very strong.
After interpreting and returning the phone, the driver grabbed her by the wrist and attempted to place a gold ring on her finger and two gold necklaces around her neck.
As she drove away, a passenger, a Middle Eastern woman of similar age with black hair, leaned out the back window and grabbed the victim by the chain she was already wearing, pulling it from her neck.
The victim fought back, officials said, clutching her own jewels before the motorist raced away, dragging her to the ground.
When police came, the woman had scrapes on her knees but was otherwise well. The jewelry that the man attempted to place on her was discovered nearby and tested for DNA, according to police.
Detectives have since surveyed the neighborhood for video surveillance. The police report did not specify whether they were able to locate any video of the incident.
The crime is being handled as a robbery, and the investigation is still underway.
