A 51-year-old woman in Wisconsin is facing serious legal consequences for her actions towards her 71-year-old husband. She allegedly poisoned him multiple times by adding animal euthanasia drugs to his coffee shortly after their marriage, causing him to enter a temporary coma.

Amanda Alicia Chapin entered a plea of no contest to a serious charge of endangering the safety of Gary Chapin, according to court records.

Amanda Chapin faced serious charges related to the poisoning incident, but she ultimately reached a plea deal with prosecutors in the Lafayette County District Attorney’s Office, resulting in a lesser charge.

Authorities suspect that Amanda Chapin allegedly used animal euthanasia drugs, which she reportedly stole from her husband, a veterinarian, to tamper with his coffee on multiple occasions between July 2022 and August 2022, as per a report from the Wisconsin State Journal. Gary Chapin allegedly fell into a coma lasting four days after receiving the third and final dose.

The problems started soon after the couple tied the knot in March 2022. According to authorities, Amanda Chapin wasted no time in forging the signature of Gary Chapin’s son in order to gain power of attorney. She then insisted that her husband modify the deed to their house, ensuring that she would become the sole homeowner if he passed away.

According to prosecutors, Amanda Chapin allegedly started poisoning her husband shortly after he made changes to the house deed. Following Gary Chapin’s coma on Aug. 21, 2022, blood tests revealed the presence of barbiturate drugs, which he utilized in his veterinary practice for animal euthanasia.

According to a report from the Journal, Gary Chapin became concerned in July 2022 after he started experiencing symptoms resembling vertigo. Amanda Chapin attempted to persuade him that he was experiencing a medical emergency. About two weeks later, he had a similar experience. According to reports, Gary Chapin informed authorities that he could only recall having his morning coffee before waking up four days later, following the third poisoning incident.

According to reports, Amanda Chapin waited for approximately three hours before contacting 911.

Right after the coma, Gary Chapin’s son took legal action against Amanda Chapin by filing a restraining order, believing she was responsible for his father’s declining health.

According to reports, shortly after Gary Chapin fell into a coma, Amanda Chapin accessed his personal email account and started forwarding his conversations with his attorney and children to her own email.

In defiance of a court order, Amanda Chapin sent a distressing email to Gary Chapin on Sept. 1, 2022. In the message, she passionately refuted the accusation of poisoning him and expressed her belief that his children were attempting to harm her.

After the plea hearing, Judge Barbara W. McCoy of Lafayette County Circuit Court has ordered a presentence investigation and set a date for Amanda Chapin’s sentencing hearing on July 25. She could potentially be sentenced to up to 12.5 years in a state correctional facility.
