Woman Arrested in California for Running Affordable Housing Scam in Glendale; Multiple Victims Lost Money for Housing Vouchers: Police

City officials in Glendale announced on Tuesday that a woman has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a series of scams targeting individuals seeking affordable housing.

A person from North Hollywood, Sima Karapetyan, allegedly pretended to be a Glendale Housing Authority employee and deceived victims by promising them access to low-income housing and improved status on the Section 8 Housing Voucher waiting list, in exchange for money.

A 47-year-old individual engaged in fraudulent activities primarily at public aid offices and local non-profit support agencies. These locations provided her with opportunities to target and exploit low-income and vulnerable elders, as reported by the Glendale Police Department.

In April 2024, the fraud scheme came to light, revealing additional allegations that Karapetyan utilized social media to lure in more victims.

It has been discovered that Karapetyan has been unlawfully obtaining funds from a minimum of 11 individuals since 2021.

Following his arrest on May 23rd, Karapetyan was charged with seven counts of theft by false pretense and four counts of elder abuse.

As of Tuesday afternoon, she was still in custody with a bail amount of $450,000 as reported by NBC Los Angeles.

The Glendale Housing Authority issued a warning advising individuals to disregard any requests for money in exchange for low-income housing assistance. Be cautious and skeptical of anyone claiming to sell low-income housing assistance on the street.
