Virginia Man Arrested for Allegedly Embezzling $4.8 Million from Birth Injury Program
Last week, a guy from Virginia was taken into custody and accused of stealing over $4.8 million from a birth injury program located in the state.
John Hunter Raines, 38, of Providence Forge, worked as the Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Program’s assistant director and chief financial officer in Richmond.
After being taken into custody on Thursday, Raines was accused of felony fraud in a criminal complaint.
The program is a fund managed by the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission that provides financial support to families of newborns with birth-related brain or spinal cord injuries that cause the child to be cognitively or developmentally retarded. Despite being an independent institution, the governor appoints each of the nine board members.
As per the court records, Raines was supposed to supervise the program’s finances, which included investments worth about $650 million in 2023.
Raines allegedly stole millions from the program between January 2022 and October 2023, causing at least 59 different wire transfers to bank accounts in his name. Allegedly, Raines utilized the program debit card for his own benefit as well.
Raines may spend up to 20 years behind bars if found guilty.
