The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, and Essex counties from 5 p.m. Wednesday until 11 a.m. Thursday. The advisory warns of mixed precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, which could create hazardous travel conditions.
Weather Forecast
According to the NWS, the affected areas can expect a dusting to 2 inches of snow and sleet accumulation, along with a light glaze of ice, potentially up to one-tenth of an inch. Additionally, wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, further complicating travel conditions.
The heaviest precipitation is expected between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight, before transitioning to plain rain with isolated freezing rain in parts of Windsor County, Vermont, on Thursday morning.
Potential Impacts
Officials warn that isolated power outages may occur due to ice accumulation on power lines and trees. Roads are expected to become slick and hazardous overnight, making travel difficult into early Thursday morning.
“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” the weather service urged in its statement.
Winter Driving Safety Tips
The NWS also provided key safety reminders for those who must travel during the storm:
- Drive slowly and assume roads may be icy, especially in near-freezing temperatures.
- Watch for ice accumulation on power lines and trees, which can cause breakage and falling hazards.
- Avoid driving when conditions worsen and, if possible, stick to roads with fewer trees and power lines.
- If stranded, stay inside your vehicle and alert someone about your location. Use a cloth on your antenna or mirrors to signal for help.
- Be mindful of snow plows and allow them ample space. Only pass them when the road ahead is clearly visible.
- Check road conditions before traveling to ensure a safe route.
With slick roads, gusty winds, and freezing precipitation in the forecast, residents are advised to prepare for delays, power disruptions, and difficult driving conditions. Authorities recommend staying off the roads if possible and taking all necessary precautions to remain safe during this winter weather event.
