‘Up The Hill’ Gang Member Arrested after Police Confrontation in New York City; Suspect Robbed Several Women and Then Shot 2 Officers: NYPD

New York City, NY- According to the NYPD, two police sergeants were shot on Thursday during a confrontation with a suspected gang member. The suspect had reportedly robbed multiple women inside a business in the Lower East Side just moments before.

A 22-year-old suspect named Joshua Dorsett reportedly shot one officer in the groin, with the same bullet grazing the other officer’s left leg, as stated by the police.

Two police officers were transported to Bellevue Hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

Dorsett was apprehended at the scene, according to authorities speaking at a press conference on Thursday evening.

During the altercation, the assailant swiftly retrieved a firearm from his waistband and discharged it, according to sources.

Dorsett, who has ties to the local “Up the Hill” gang, has a history of three previous arrests, one of which was for criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to law enforcement. He is currently on probation and even made a visit to his probation officer on Thursday morning.

Prior to the shooting incident, it is reported that Dorsett committed a series of robberies, targeting several women and stealing their purses at a Mahjong Parlor located at 91 Canal Street. The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m., according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

Officers quickly responded to the scene after receiving a report from the victims. The victims provided a description of the suspect, and a pair of sergeants spotted a person matching that description on Delancey Street just seven minutes later.

An individual, later identified as Dorsett, put up resistance when authorities tried to restrain him.

Dorsett and the two sergeants engaged in a physical altercation with a suspect near a vehicle, which escalated when the individual reportedly retrieved a firearm from his waistband and discharged a single round.

The officers refrained from retaliating despite sustaining gunshot wounds.

Additional officers successfully apprehended Dorsett and placed him under arrest. Charges against the suspected gunman were still pending as of Thursday night.

Kenny reported that a 45 Taurus semi-automatic pistol was found by the police at the scene.

Two injured police officers were quickly transported to Bellevue Hospital.

A sergeant in the NYPD has 16 years of experience and is 43 years old. According to NYPD Chief of the Department Jeffrey Maddrey and sources, the other sergeant, Christopher Leap, is 34 years old and has been with the police department for 11 years.

Maddrey mentioned that both sergeants are in high spirits.

The injured officer, who was grazed in the leg, was discharged from the hospital around 9 p.m. A crowd of uniformed officers cheered as he was wheeled out of the doors in a wheelchair. The sergeant who was injured in the groin is expected to stay in the hospital overnight.
