A family in Northwest Miami-Dade is reeling after a devastating electrical fire tore through their longtime home Tuesday night, leaving it charred, unlivable, and filled with memories now reduced to ash.
Angela Delancy, who has lived in the home near Northwest 24th Avenue and 95th Street for over 20 years, was inside with the family cat, Joey, when the fire suddenly erupted.
“Now I got no memory of him being up in here,” Angela said, overwhelmed with emotion.
Fire crews arrived quickly and managed to contain the blaze to the main bedroom, though smoke and flames had already spread through the front of the house.
Angela’s son, Dewitt Delancy, ran across the street to help.
“The flames were hot, black smoke started coming out of the room. I couldn’t see anything, like my eyes were blurry. I felt the smoke going in my lungs,” he recalled.
He tried to fight the fire using an extinguisher, even attempting to spray it through the window, but it was no use.
The fire may have been triggered by nearby work involving power tools. The family said they heard someone cutting trees with an electric saw on an adjacent property just before the fire. Angela remembered hearing a loud popping sound, followed by a sudden loss of power — and then flames.
“Pop, pop, pop, pop, like that,” she said.
Amid the chaos, Angela had to be hospitalized for anxiety, but her family said she is recovering. The Red Cross is now assisting the displaced family.
Despite the loss, the Delancys are grateful to have survived.
“They just took everything away from me. Everything is gone,” Angela said through tears, mourning the home where she raised her family with her late husband.
Authorities are investigating the fire, including the possibility of a downed power line, which was mentioned in police radio traffic during the incident.
