Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella has announced the arrest of two Berks County, Pennsylvania natives for possession of approximately 14,000 fentanyl pills with intent to distribute.
Edgar Holguin-Reyes, 30, and Yakayra Reyes, 27, both of Reading, were taken into custody on Tuesday after an extensive investigation led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck.
Traffic Stop Leads to Major Drug Bust
According to officials, the arrests stemmed from a narcotics investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force. Detectives identified a vehicle suspected of transporting and distributing illegal drugs.
On Sunday at approximately 6:35 p.m., authorities located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on I-287 in Mahwah, New Jersey, with assistance from the Mahwah Police Department.
Upon searching the vehicle under a court-authorized warrant, detectives uncovered approximately 14,000 fentanyl pills, which authorities estimate have a street value of $420,000.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Following the discovery, Holguin-Reyes and Reyes were arrested and charged with second-degree possession with intent to distribute fentanyl-laced pills. They were subsequently remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending their first court appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella emphasized that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement officials work to dismantle drug trafficking networks in the region.
