Trump Reportedly Weighs Executive Order to Limit NIL After Meeting With Nick Saban

A new issue that could make the fight over how much college players should be paid even more difficult could come from President Trump himself.

The president may sign an order about NIL payments after talking with Nick Saban, the former head football coach of Alabama, on Thursday night, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Saban allegedly told Trump about NIL while Trump was in Tuscaloosa giving the commencement address at the University of Alabama. He said that he thought the system hurt college sports. So, the coach didn’t suggest getting rid of NIL. Instead, he suggested “reforming” it to fix what he saw as an unfair playing field.

Reports say Trump agreed with Saban and would write an executive order. He told his staff to start thinking about what the order would say.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., helped set up the meeting with the hope that it would be the first step toward changing NIL. On Wednesday, he said:

“We really hope that we can meet with Coach Saban.” Trump would like to help with this NIL. It’s not clear to me how he can do it with an executive order. I think we could sit down and talk about what Coach Saban and I think about it. Then we could come to some kind of understanding, because things are going badly right now.
