Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Security Guard Near University of Illinois Chicago and Suspect on Large: Authorities

A security guard, aged 44, was discovered deceased from a gunshot wound in close proximity to the University of Illinois Chicago campus, situated on the West Side of the city.

An incident occurred at approximately 4:10 a.m. on Monday in the 1400 block of South Morgan in the University Village neighborhood, which is located just two blocks away from a Chicago police station.

Police responded to a report of a person shot and found the man on the ground. According to authorities, the individual had several gunshot wounds to the torso and was declared deceased at the location.

According to a source, the 44-year-old man worked as a security guard at the Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments for a year before his tragic death.

Benford Protection Group has identified the security guard who was killed as Damien Nelson. Following the tragic shooting incident, Benford Protection Group issued a statement.

“In the wake of the tragic incident where Security Officer Damien Nelson lost his life, Benford Protection Group extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Officer Nelson was a dedicated member of our team, who was loved and respected by the clients he served and the colleagues with whom he worked. His dedication, bravery, service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Our collective prayers and condolences are extended to the Nelson family as they navigate this heartbreaking period.  Benford Protection Group is offering immediate grief counselling assistance to any and all employees who request this assistance.

This act of violence is not just an attack on an individual but on the safety and well-being of our entire community. We condemn this cowardly and reprehensible act in the strongest possible terms. The safety and security of our personnel, as well as all members of the communities we serve, are of paramount importance. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities in their investigation to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are swiftly brought to justice. According to initial findings, Nelson was shot by an individual who was in a dark-colored sedan.

Upon learning about the security guard’s passing, nearby resident Lisa Ludwig expressed how much his life meant to many people in the community, according to WGN News.

Over the weekend, a tragic wave of gun violence in Chicago resulted in the loss of eight lives and left over 40 individuals injured.

There are no individuals currently under arrest. Area Three Detectives are currently conducting an investigation.
