Tragic Incident: Illinois Father Found Guilty of Fatally Assaulting Daughter Following Prom Dispute

A tragic incident occurred in Illinois where a father was found guilty of fatally assaulting his teenage daughter after a heated disagreement about her prom in 2022.
A verdict was reached on Friday, Aug. 16, in the case of Mohammed Almaru, 42, of Tinley Park. He has been found guilty of first-degree murder for his involvement in the tragic death of his daughter, 17-year-old Mia Maro. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed this in a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, Aug. 19.
According to Patch, jurors reached a verdict in less than an hour.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Maro, a senior at Andrew High School, was unfortunately subjected to physical abuse by her father inside their home on May 1, 2022, as reported by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
In May, FOX 32 Chicago shared court documents revealing that Almaru initially allowed his daughter to go to her senior prom on April 29, 2022. However, he later had a change of heart, citing a lack of trust.
According to the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors revealed that Almaru’s sister discovered her niece hidden under a blanket in their home on May 1st.
Almaru was seated on the floor next to the teenager, with his arm resting on his daughter’s body.
According to court documents, Maro had multiple bruises and injuries to various parts of her body, including her head, arms, legs, and feet. According to the documents, it was revealed that she experienced severe bleeding and damage to her brain. The evidence suggests that her father used various objects to cause these injuries.
According to a statement from the police on May 4, 2022, the man was discovered inside his home alongside his deceased daughter, with injuries to his wrist and throat that were determined to be self-inflicted.
According to ABC-7 Chicago, neighbors witnessed the father being transported on a stretcher while other concerned family members arrived at the residence. The neighbors witnessed a tumultuous scene, with an abundance of raised voices.
According to the police statement, Almaru had taken pills and was transported to Christ Hospital for stabilization.
According to court documents, Almaru sent a text to one of his sons after Maro’s death, expressing remorse and acknowledging that he had acted irrationally.
According to ABC-7 Chicago, prosecutors have stated that Maro and her father were involved in a heated argument regarding her prom, which was allegedly related to her previous car accident.
According to the Chicago Tribune, court documents have revealed that in 2019, Almaru’s wife and Maro’s mother experienced a medical emergency that resulted in her being non-verbal and in need of constant care.
Maro’s loved ones shared that the teenager aspired to become a dental hygienist.
According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Almaru’s next court date has been scheduled for September 7 to address post-trial motions.
