Toddler Killed by Pit Bull After Babysitters Leave Children Unattended

Miamistandard– A couple from Texas is facing felony charges after their pit dog allegedly attacked and murdered a two-year-old girl who they were supposed to be babysitting. Instead of watching the child, they left her alone and put an eleven-year-old in charge.

Deidre Wheeler and her husband, Lacharles Ramsey, are both facing multiple allegations of child endangerment and child injury. On December 29, about 5 p.m., police in Wichita Falls, North Texas, received a 911 call regarding a pit bull that was attacking a youngster. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, the police stated that the girl was “bleeding badly and was non-responsive.” The girl was taken to the hospital by paramedics, where physicians declared her dead.

It took investigators over a month to uncover the unfortunate sequence of events. Wheeler has six children of her own, and she and Ramsey have committed to take care of two additional children, who are two years old and eight months old, respectively, according to the affidavit. She left the two children she was babysitting at her house, where her oldest children, who are 19 and 16 years old, took over babysitting duties from around midday till 4 p.m. According to the affidavit, Wheeler returned, picked up the 16-year-old and 19-year-old, and transported them to an event, leaving the 11-year-old in charge.

The pit bull broke out of the kennel and chased after the 8-month-old while she and her husband were away for 45 minutes. The other children managed to save the eight-month-old from the dog. However, the pit bull then attacked the two-year-old. The youngster was already badly hurt when Wheeler and Ramsey arrived home during the attack. They jumped into their car and drove the girl to the hospital, where they encountered emergency services along the way.

Later, the 11-year-old told the police that she contacted her mom and requested her to come home because the other children were “out of control.” She was making dinner for the other children at the time. According to the affidavit, that is when the dog escaped.

The investigators discovered that the dog had previously escaped and bitten one of the other youngsters around one year before. Ramsey and Wheeler “abandoned” the kids and “failed to provide appropriate supervision” despite a “known aggressive pit bull” being present in the house, cops said. Wheeler is being held in the Wichita County jail on a bond of $450,000, while Ramsey’s bond is set at $300,000.

According to the Wichita Falls Times Record News, the dog has been put down. The authorities have not disclosed the name of the victim.
