Suspect Flees at 100 MPH Without Headlights, Crashes Into Cemetery, and Resists Arrest in Monona

Miami Standard (Monona, WI) – A dangerous high-speed pursuit early Wednesday morning led to the arrest of a Wisconsin man after he crashed into a cemetery and threatened law enforcement officers.

The incident began around 2:10 a.m. on March 26 when a Monona Police Department officer spotted a vehicle traveling west on Highway 12 at nearly 100 mph without headlights. Unable to initiate a pursuit, the officer radioed dispatch with details about the reckless driver.

Shortly after, a 911 caller reported seeing the same vehicle further west on Highway 12 near Todd Drive and Seminole Highway. Monona PD was then notified that the suspect had turned east and was speeding back toward Monona, still with no headlights on.

Officers attempted to stop the driver as he reentered Monona, but he refused to comply, leading to an extended pursuit.

The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Rojae A. Crosse of Sun Prairie, continued driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The chase eventually led southbound on Marsh Road in McFarland, where Crosse lost control on a turn and crashed into a small cemetery, damaging multiple gravestones. He immediately fled the scene on foot.

Authorities located Crosse running behind a nearby residence and took him into custody after a struggle. A Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the arrest, according to officials.

While in custody, Crosse reportedly refused to cooperate and made multiple threats to harm and kill officers. Authorities observed signs of impairment, and he was processed for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) before being transported to a local emergency room for evaluation.

Crosse was later booked into the Dane County Jail and is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Eluding
  • Threats to Law Enforcement
  • OWI – 3rd Offense
  • Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer

Officials also noted that Crosse has a criminal history that includes multiple felony eluding offenses. Authorities have not provided further details regarding the deputy’s injuries.

The case remains under investigation.
