A 54-year-old man named Emanuel Edward Sewell is facing charges of second-degree murder.
A Maryland parole and probation agent, Davis Martinez, conducted a routine resident check on Friday, May 31 for Emanuel Edward Sewell, a convicted sex offender aged 54.
However, when Martinez failed to provide an update, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police were sent to Sewell’s apartment in Chevy Chase.
Officers discovered the residence to be tightly secured with blinds drawn. According to a charging document obtained by PEOPLE, entry into the apartment was forced after attempts to establish communication with both Martinez and Sewell.
According to the documents, Martinez was discovered wrapped in multiple plastic bags underneath a bed. The document states that officers observed the body in the fetal position and noticed a bloodied towel near the front door.
The prosecutors revealed that Martinez had suffered multiple stab wounds, including to his head, face, brain, and neck.
According to a neighbor, there was a report of loud knocking on Sewell’s door at approximately 9 a.m. that morning. Later in the day, at around 2 p.m., a witness reported seeing Sewell walking towards a dumpster and then returning to his apartment.
Shortly after, it was reported that he was seen leaving his apartment carrying two transparent trash bags filled with clothing. According to the charging document, he left the scene in his Hyundai Elantra.
Sewell was apprehended the following day in West Virginia, according to the Post. According to the Post, he has been charged with second-degree murder and was ordered to be held without bail on Monday, June 10.
According to the Post, the convicted sex offender had been under supervision since 2021 following a lengthy prison sentence for the 1996 rape of a physicist.
As per a charging document from October 31, 1996, obtained by PEOPLE, Sewell entered the man’s residence through an unlocked ground level kitchen window. He then confronted the man in his bed, brandishing a knife, and proceeded to restrain him by binding his hands and feet. Subsequently, a sexual assault took place. Following the attack, he took the victim’s ATM card, video cassette recorder, and 1991 Plymouth Colt. According to the charging document, he reportedly confessed the attack to the police.
Sewell has not yet entered a plea. His lawyer was unavailable for comment.
