Salmonella Contamination in Cucumbers: 14 States Issues Recall; Check List of States
Cucumbers potentially contaminated with Salmonella have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration, according to an announcement made on Saturday.
Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida has issued a recall for cucumbers that were distributed to wholesalers and distributors in 14 states from May 17th through May 21st, 2024.
The states are:
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Maryland
- North Carolina
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- West Virginia
A recall was initiated following notification from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture that a product sample tested positive for Salmonella. The FDA is currently conducting tests on the affected produce to determine if there are any potential links to ongoing outbreaks.
Consumers are encouraged to contact their grocer to inquire about the availability of the cucumbers in question. However, according to the FDA, it is highly improbable that the affected produce has been distributed to grocery stores.
The FDA states that Salmonella is a bacteria that can lead to severe and occasionally deadly infections in vulnerable individuals such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
