Sacramento County Freeway Takeover Stopped by CHP, Multiple Citations Issued

Last weekend in Sacramento County, police from the California Highway Patrol issued 23 penalties after stopping approximately 100 vehicles in what they called “a freeway takeover” during a sideshow.

In a recent announcement, the CHP Valley Division detailed how their officers utilized “proactive intelligence and strategic deployment” to put an end to the incident that occurred on Saturday night on Highway 244 from Auburn Boulevard.

The accident happened on a road that runs east of Del Paso Regional Park and before the intersection of the Capital City Freeway and Interstate 80.

At around 10 o’clock in the evening, the California Highway Patrol reported that 100 automobiles “attempted a freeway takeover,” but that police in patrol cars and CHP planes “swiftly responded.”

As soon as the sideshow began, the majority of the participants left. According to the CHP, authorities made one arrest and issued 23 tickets.

According to a Facebook post by the CHP, they were ready for possible disruptions by an organized group by using existing resources and overtime paid for by grants from the Office of Traffic Safety. “To make sure everyone involved and the general public were safe, our teams worked together perfectly.”

According to a recent story by The Sacramento Bee, sideshows are “illegal gatherings in which groups of drivers take over intersections, city streets, stretches of busy freeways and/or parking lots to do tricks with their cars, including burnouts and doughnuts.”

On occasion, crowds of spectators numbering in the hundreds will obstruct even more traffic lanes. To evade the authorities, some sideshows stay open for hours, while others close in minutes.
