Tallahassee, FL- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a state of emergency in response to a potential tropical disturbance developing in the Caribbean.
Chances of the tropical disturbance, known as Invest 97L, intensifying are growing as it moves closer to the US.
Despite the lack of clarity, the FOX Forecast Center has provided some insights into the potential impacts on the US.
A potential weather system could potentially develop into a tropical depression or even a tropical storm in the coming days as it moves towards the Gulf of Mexico.
The NHC reports that a tropical wave is causing widespread showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Southeastern Bahamas, and nearby areas of the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea.
People in the Greater Antilles, Bahamas, and Florida are advised to stay updated on the progress of this system, according to the NHC.
“Development of this system should be slow to occur during the next day or so while it moves west-northwestward over portions of the Greater Antilles,” NHC said in its latest outlook.
“However, environmental conditions are forecast to be more conducive for development after the wave passes the Greater Antilles, and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend or early next week over the eastern Gulf of Mexico near the Florida Peninsula.”
There is a disturbance that has a low chance of developing in the next two days, but the odds are gradually increasing. In fact, the NHC has now raised the chances of development to the “high” category within a week.
If the system intensifies into a tropical storm, it will be given the name Debby – marking it as the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
