Pregnant Mother of 3 Stabbed 15 times in Neck in LaGrange; Killer from Alabama and Accomplice sent to Prison for Life

LaGrange, GA: An Alabama man brutally stabbed a pregnant woman from LaGrange, Georgia, while she was 26 years old, and her unborn child was also killed. The woman’s life sentence might be life in prison.

Breanna Burgess was a single mother of three who was five months along in her pregnancy when her 30-year-old accomplice, Curteze Avery of Lafeyette, Alabama, pled guilty to her murder on March 27.

Near the intersection of Fort Drive and Whitesville Road in LaGrange, Burgess’s body was discovered by officers conducting a regular check on the morning of July 27, 2022, according to officials. There were almost a dozen knife wounds to her neck.

The companion who was with Burgess just before she passed away was able to be located through phone records; the friend informed investigators that she last saw Burgess and Avery get into a neon green Chevrolet Camaro and drive away.

The investigators used traffic cameras to follow the car to a residence in LaGrange, where they discovered blood on the vehicle’s outside. There were bloodstained garments in the home’s washing machine and dryer when Avery was discovered hiding inside. The crime lab of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation positively identified the victim based on DNA testing.

Avery and Shallandra Freeman were both taken into custody by the police and are now facing charges of murder and feticide.

“Curteze Avery cut short the life of Breanna Burgess and her unborn child. For this, it is just that he is now sentenced to serve life in prison,” Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney John Herbert Cranford Jr. wrote in a statement. “While the family of Ms. Burgess will never fully heal from this senseless crime, the District Attorney’s Office is relieved to have obtained a life sentence without the family experiencing the difficulty and uncertainty of a jury trial.

In response to Avery’s guilty plea, a judge in the superior court handed down a life sentence. In 2052, Avery will be eligible for parole; nevertheless, the board has the authority to deny the request.
