Parents Killed Their Disabled Son; Wrapped in Blanket and Put the Corpse in Freezer in Alabama; Filed Innocent Plea in Court

A father is pleading not guilty to charges related to the death of his 19-year-old special needs son.

Michael Shane Halstead, 44, has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of corpse abuse and reckless manslaughter of his son. The indictment was made by a Henry County Grand Jury.

Accompanied by her husband, Karen Tysinger Halstead, 43, had previously entered a plea of not guilty to the charges on May 22.

The indictments state that the Halsteads were responsible for the tragic passing of their special needs son, 19-year-old Logan Michael Halstead, due to their alleged neglect. The indictments detail the actions taken after Logan’s passing, as his parents carefully wrapped his body in plastic bags and blankets and placed him in a freezer.

A freezer and a body were discovered in the backyard of a Headland trailer that the Halsteads had previously rented in late October 2023.

According to Sheriff Eric Blankenship, it is believed that Logan Halsead’s body was placed in the freezer in late August 2023, shortly before the Halstead family relocated from Headland to Jack, Alabama. A shocking discovery was made by the new renters as they were cleaning the property.

Investigators have determined that Logan had Spinal Bifida. The Halsteads were initially charged with abuse of a corpse, but court documents state that a subsequent investigation uncovered enough evidence to upgrade the charges to reckless manslaughter.
