One Dead, Several Injured After Boat and Ferry Collision in Clearwater, Florida, Officials Report

One person died and several were hurt when a leisure boat and a ferry carrying 45 people crashed in Clearwater, Florida, according to CNN.

Rob Shaw, a public information officer for the Clearwater police, says that the recreational boat left the scene of the crime but has been recognised by another police agency.

Police had already said that six people were “trauma alerts,” and two of them were flown away from the scene by chopper. Shaw said that one of the people who was hurt later died from “injuries sustained” in the crash.

“The fire department has called it a mass casualty incident because so many people were hurt,” police said.

Authorities say they were told at 8:40 p.m. local time that a boat had hit the ferry near the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge.

Police say that all of the other people on board were safely removed after the ferry came to rest on a sandbar just south of the bridge.

It’s not clear what caused the crash.

Police say that everyone who was hurt was on the boat. Police had earlier said that two patients who were taken away by helicopter were “seriously injured.”

As Shaw told CNN, “it is not thought that anyone has been reported missing from the ferry.”

Police say that two crew members were among the 45 people on board.

The US Coast Guard said it knew about the accident and that workers from Station Sand Key and other partner agencies were already there.

CNN called the Pinellas County Fire Department and the mayor’s office to find out more.

People are being asked to stay off the Memorial Causeway while rescue workers are still there.

Clearwater police said that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be in charge of the crash probe.
