Ohio Women Arrested After Using Dead Man’s Body to Steal $900
The tragic ploy of two Ohio women to steal hundreds of dollars from an 80-year-old man’s bank account by placing his body in the passenger seat of his automobile and then withdrawing the money from the drive-thru ATM has led to their arrest.
According to court papers found online, 63-year-old Karen Casbohm and 55-year-old Loreen Bea Feralo were punished after admitting to charges of petty theft and abuse of corpse in the strange case involving the remains of 80-year-old Douglas Layman. Feralo will serve 15 months of his sentence while Casbohm will serve 17 months.
The investigation commenced on March 4, as previously reported by Law&Crime.
Casbohm and Feralo, who were not connected to Layman but lived in his home, were alleged by the police to have discovered his body earlier that day. After placing Layman’s corpse in his car, the women allegedly took $900 in cash from his account and drove to the bank, with the help of a man who is facing charges in the case.
According to Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell, the women allegedly “propped up” Layman in the backseat of his vehicle so the bank tellers would notice him—something the bank had previously authorized, according to Stell.
The authorities alleged that Layman’s body was placed in the passenger seat so that the bank teller could see him, enabling the withdrawal to go place.
The ladies drove to the Ashtabula County Medical Center after the bank run, left Layman’s body there, and then fled without giving any identification to the hospital workers, who then contacted the authorities.
Casbohm and Feralo were apprehended by the police a few hours later after one of the women contacted the hospital and divulged some private details about the deceased guy to a member of the staff.
The reason for Layman’s demise remains unknown. In March, local NBC station WKYC stated that the completion of an autopsy might take as long as eight months.
The news of Layman’s demise shocked his stepson James Hubbard, according to WKYC.
According to Hubbard, Casbohm was the girlfriend of his stepfather as reported by Law and Crime.
He informed WKYC that he had gone through “all hell” with this woman for three years, including drug use, theft, and selling his possessions.
