Off-Duty Texas Cop Arrested after DUI Crash; Obstructed Public Duties of Officers Responding to the Crash Site: Docs
A Houston police officer was arrested in the early hours of May 18, 2024, after being involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Porter. The arrest was made by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the incident at approximately 2 a.m. and discovered that Norma Miranda Estrada and Adan Lopez, the individuals in the vehicle, were already receiving medical attention in the back of an ambulance due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Estrada, the driver, was discovered to be under the influence and was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. She was taken into custody and placed in the Montgomery County Jail.
An individual named Lopez, who was later revealed to be an off-duty Houston Police Officer, has been taken into custody on charges of interfering with public duties and unlawful carry of a weapon. The deputies reported that Lopez repeatedly disregarded instructions and disrupted the investigation while Estrada underwent field sobriety testing.
Initial findings suggest that Estrada had her seatbelt on at the time of the crash, whereas Lopez did not. This information was crucial in identifying the driver of the vehicle. Lopez sustained several facial injuries in the accident and received medical attention from EMS before being taken to a nearby hospital. He was subsequently transported to the Montgomery County Jail.
The Internal Affairs Division of the Houston Police Department was alerted and promptly arrived at the hospital to meet with Lopez prior to his transfer.
