NYPD Cop in Court on Manslaughter Charges after He Allegedly Killed Drug Trafficking Suspect in Bronx
A sergeant from the New York Police Department returned to court on charges of murder in the Bronx that stem from last summer when he allegedly threw a cooler at a man.
The judge heard from Erik Duran, who is facing manslaughter and other accusations related to the August 2023 death of Eric Duprey. Over a dozen of his fellow policemen surrounded him during the appearance.
The case’s representative, the New York Attorney General’s Office, has stated that it is still awaiting discovery from the defense; the next scheduled court session is July 30.
Supporters of Duprey, including members of Black Lives Matter Greater New York, and his family, gathered for a news conference a day before the hearing.
“Today, we say ‘No more.’ This case is to hold the police accountable,” said Chivona Newsome, with Black Lives Matter Greater New York. “Letitia James has filed the appropriate charges. We need to restore justice. We need to bring peace to Eric’s three children. We need his mother to be able to rest at night.”

When Duprey and her family finally met the guy accused of her brother’s murder, the woman fell to her knees and sobbed openly.
Terror ensued as the family and their supporters exited the courtroom. Video footage of Black Lives Matter Greater New York founder Hawk Newsome’s arrest shows him being apprehended by police while he claims to be counseling a grieving family. Three summonses for disorderly behavior were served on him. News outlets in New York have not yet received a response from the judicial system regarding the arrest.
“I’m shaking right now at the fact that we have to sit in another court and fight for another young man to get justice,” said Tanesha Grant, founder of Parents Supporting Parents New York. “Even if they convict this police officer, Eric Duprey’s family will never be the same. His kids will never be the same.”
The mayhem at Kingsbridge Heights was caught on camera by surveillance cameras on August 23.
Duran was believed to be an undercover agent with the New York Police Department’s Narcotics Unit, according to the attorney general.
As reported by the AG’s office, Duprey escaped on a motorbike while police attempted to apprehend him in connection with a drug transaction.

According to the footage, Duran threw a picnic cooler at Duprey’s head, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle and slide under another one. His death was officially recorded at the site, and it was established that he had suffered blunt-force injuries to the head.
Following the event, Duran was placed on administrative leave without pay and entered a not-guilty plea in January. Possible sentence of up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.
During Duran’s arraignment, his defense team contended that Sergeant Duprey should have been aware better than to be responsible for his death, while the prosecution opposed this claim.
