A New York City police officer was taken into custody on Sunday for allegedly forcibly entering her sister-in-law’s residence in Queens with her husband and assaulting their family member by choking her, according to law enforcement officials and prosecutors.

Maria and Robert Villalta, both 39, are accused of assaulting the victim during a break-in that occurred in the early hours of the morning, as stated in a criminal complaint.

Upon entering the residence, Robert Villalta reportedly forcefully pushed his sister onto a bed and proceeded to choke her.

According to prosecutors, he reportedly struck her in the face.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that Maria Villalta not only struck her, but also placed both hands around her neck during the assault.

According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Robert Villalta is accused of assaulting a man who was present in the apartment with his sister. Allegedly, Villalta punched the man and proceeded to choke him.

Both victims reported experiencing difficulty breathing after the alleged assault. According to the complaint, the cop’s sister-in-law had visible marks on her face, neck, and arm, along with a bloody nose.

On Sunday evening, the NYPD announced the arrest of Maria Villalta in Queens at around 4:15 a.m. The department stated that she was suspended without pay as per The Post.

Prosecutors have charged her and her husband with second-degree burglary, third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and second-degree harassment.
