New Judge Assigned to Suspect Accused of Murdering the Mother of His Child, Venue Change Request Not Granted Yet

A 36-year-old man is accused of stabbing his child’s mother, leading to first-degree murder charges. The suspect, who was discovered in a park, had a past filled with stalking and domestic abuse. A new judge is requested for a fair trial, which changes the course of the case.
Last month, Judge Cotton Walker withdrew from the murder case involving Sergio Sayles. On Wednesday, the case was assigned to Judge Jon Beetem.

Following the death of his child’s mother, Sayles, 36, of Jefferson City, was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, tampering with evidence, first-degree harassment, and first-degree stalking.

The top prosecutor in Cole County filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty in April.
Court records state that the purpose of the requested venue change is to guarantee jury diversity should the case proceed to trial. The prosecution, however, is contesting that and asking the judge to reject the motion.

Sayles is being held at the Cole County Jail without any bond. In April, he was charged with killing Jasmine King with a knife.
