A tragic incident happened at a Georgia prison as a prison employee was fatally shot by an inmate who then took his own life, according to officials.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), a shooting occurred at Smith State Prison in Glennville on Sunday. The individual responsible has been identified as Jaydrekus Hart, who is currently serving time for voluntary manslaughter.

Aureon Shavea Grace, the victim, was on duty in the prison’s kitchen when the incident occurred. Authorities have confirmed that Hart allegedly fired a shot at the young woman in the early hours of the morning.

Authorities suspect that Hart subsequently took his own life. Tragically, Grace was declared deceased at the scene, while Hart was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“The inmate tragically took his own life and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” the GDC explained.

The GDC is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the tragic incident. During the incident, Hart was in the early stages of a 20-year sentence and had a release date set for June 2043.

An official informed Fox News Digital that the weapon is currently in GDC custody, and a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the events leading up to this tragic incident. “GDC Special Agents have been dispatched to the facility to provide staffing support.”
