Missouri Couple Brutally Stabbed by Ohio Man on Nebraska I-80; Husband Dead leaving Injured Wife Reeling with Grief

A tragic incident occurred at an Interstate 80 rest stop in Nebraska, where a 72-year-old man lost his life and his wife was critically injured in a stabbing incident during an attempted robbery, according to the police.

A 22-year-old man from Elyria, Ohio, named James Thompson Jr., is currently in custody on multiple charges, including first-degree murder. These charges stem from an incident that occurred in Doniphan on Wednesday morning.

At approximately 7 a.m., the Hall County Sheriff’s Department swiftly responded to a disturbance call at 4148 I-80. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two individuals who had unfortunately sustained injuries resulting from an assault involving a knife.

The department stated that a 72-year-old male from Eureka, Missouri, tragically succumbed to his injuries from the assault and was pronounced dead at Grand Island Regional Hospital. The victim has been identified as Gary Weaver.

His 71-year-old wife, Mary Weaver, is said to have sustained severe injuries and is currently in critical condition at the same hospital.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Department stated that the incident is believed to have originated as an attempted robbery. According to the department, the couple was traveling through Nebraska in their mobile home when the incident occurred.

The suspect managed to escape the rest area in a vehicle before authorities arrived, but according to Grand Island Police Captain Dean Elliott, officers were able to obtain a description as per FOX News.

According to The Associated Press, the Nebraska State Patrol attempted to halt a vehicle that closely resembled the one mentioned near Wood River. The vehicle then led the patrol on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph, before eventually exiting the interstate and heading south.

The vehicle ended up driving into the Platte River, according to Elliott. Thompson was apprehended by state troopers with the assistance of a police dog approximately 30 minutes later.

Thompson is currently facing a range of serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and willful reckless driving, according to jail records.
