Mississippi Triple Murder Suspect Shot Dead by in Arizona: Troopers Report; Killed 3 Family Members on Mother’s Day in Ridgeland

The Ridgeland Police Department in Mississippi reported that a man shot and killed by law enforcement in Arizona was the suspect in the Mother’s Day massacre in Mississippi. The man was a triple murder suspect in Mississippi.

On Monday morning, reports surfaced of a shootout that had closed US 191 between Morenci and Clifton. The incident included Arizona DPS officers.

According to the Ridgeland police, Ivory James Welch III opened fire on Arizona DPS troopers during a traffic encounter. DPS has not verified the information and has only stated that Welch produced a weapon before to being shot.

Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers stated that Welch was wanted in relation to the murders of his mother and two sisters that occurred within the City of Ridgeland.

“We’ve never had a triple homicide,” Myers said. “This is a new one for us.”

Vicky Renee Welch, 56, Crystal Lynn Welch, 42, and Ida Thomas Welch, 76, are the victims. There were gunshots inside a home, according to Myers.

The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Track Force was reportedly following Ivory Welch’s phone, according to Myers. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Arizona state troopers made an effort to detain Ivory Welch. The Arizona Department of Public Safety has informed troopers that he may be in the Safford area, according to a representative from the agency.

Ivory Welch was the target of gunfire when state troopers tried to stop him.

“This investigation is a great example of how teamwork in law enforcement, as well as a great relationship with our media outlets, affords us swift justice for a grieving family,” Myers wrote that statement. “This horrific event will have a lasting effect on this family, the officers involved in this investigation as well as our brothers in Arizona law enforcement.”  

State officials have announced a bidirectional closure of US 191 between mileposts 167 and 164 in eastern Arizona. At this moment, we do not have a projected opening time.

Small cars may be able to use Shannon Hill while US 191 is closed, according to the Clifton police.
