Mississippi Dog Fighting Bust: Heroes in Como Rescue Dozens of Abused Dogs

In Mississippi involved a significant bust of a dog fighting ring in Panola County. Authorities from the Panola County Sheriff’s Office discovered the illegal operation following a 911 hang-up call from a residence on Rayburn Road in Como. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a large group of individuals who fled the scene in various vehicles. The operation resulted in the rescue of approximately 29 to 30 dogs, all in varying health conditions and showing signs of involvement in dog fights, such as scars and injuries​​​​​​​​​​​​.

The main suspect, 37-year-old Damien Jay Smoot, was arrested at the scene. Smoot, the owner of the residence where the operation was conducted, is charged with dog fighting, a felony offense. Along with rescuing the dogs, authorities seized dog fighting equipment and 13 vehicles associated with individuals implicated in the ring. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office is working with other entities to provide care for the rescued dogs, and further arrests are expected as the investigation continues​​.
