Minnesota Police Officer Shot Dead by Gunshot Victim; Suspected Gunmen Dead, Innocent Bystander and Firefighter Critically Injured in Minneapolis

A Minneapolis police officer tragically lost his life while responding to a shooting call, when he was unexpectedly attacked while trying to assist a man who was shot. According to authorities, the man ended up shooting the officer instead.

A tragic incident unfolded during a tumultuous event, where two crime scenes, located just two blocks apart, resulted in the loss of Officer Jamal Mitchell’s life. This unfortunate incident also led to the death of three individuals, while two others were left in critical condition and an officer and firefighter sustained less severe injuries.

“I’ve watched the video, and he was ambushed,” stated Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans during an evening news conference. “I have a specific purpose for using that term.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey assured the public that authorities are actively investigating the situation and requested their patience as all the facts are not yet known. We are committed to ensuring a thorough and proper completion of the investigation.

Law enforcement shared a concise account of the incident, beginning with officers being dispatched to an apartment complex in the south Minneapolis neighborhood of Whittier in response to a report of a double shooting.

While Mitchell was just a couple of blocks away from the complex, he came across some people who appeared to be injured. He stepped out of his vehicle to offer assistance to an individual, who unfortunately ended up shooting the officer.

According to Minneapolis Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell, another officer arrived at the scene and engaged in a shootout with the perpetrator. Despite the officers’ efforts to save the shooter’s life, they were unable to prevent their death.

The officer sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. According to Evans, a second individual, who is thought to be an innocent bystander, was shot and transported to a hospital in critical condition. A firefighter was also injured by a gunshot.

Upon arrival at the apartment, other officers discovered two individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds. According to Evans, one person unfortunately lost their life while another was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The connection between the two shooting scenes was not immediately apparent. Authorities had assured the public that there was no cause for concern.
