Miami-Dade police officer Donovan Rojas arrested in the Keys for DUI and fleeing deputies
2022-06-13, Key Largo: Early on Sunday morning, an off-duty Miami-Dade police officer was taken into custody in the Keys for rash driving.
Donovan William Rojas was driving a Chrysler 300 headed north on US-1 near Mile Marker 101 in Key Largo at approximately 3:55 a.m., according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the deputies’ lights and sirens being turned on, Rojas allegedly refused to stop. He chose to speed instead and reached over a limit of 110 mph.
Along with the DUI charge, Donovan Rojas is also accused of dashing away and eluding authorities. He also refused to undergo breathalyzer testing when taken into custody.
“I want to thank my officers for acting quickly in this case,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.
“Though this suspect’s behavior put his life, innocent civilian lives, and the lives of my officers in danger, I view this as a singular case and not indicative of the Miami-Dade Police Department as a whole, which remains a close and important law enforcement partner to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.”
The dashcam footage of Rojas’s car is taken as a piece of evidence. It is clearly visible from the tape how he responded when the authorities tried to stop him.
After Rojas was arrested, Miami-Dade Police Director George Perez issued a statement. Part of it read:
“The MDPD will not tolerate this behavior as it is not aligned with our commitment to the community and its sacred trust. As is customary, the department will assist and cooperate with the judicial process. During this time, the employee will remain relieved of his official duties and because his actions involve a felony charge, his pay will be suspended in accordance with policy.”
