According to the California Highway Patrol, a 51-year-old Santa Clara man lost his life in a traffic accident at Highway 101 and Montague Expressway on Wednesday night.

The 2000 Mercedes-Benz ML430 crashed into a tree after veering off the Montague Expressway off-ramp from northbound Highway 101 at approximately 8:53 p.m., according to a news release from the CHP.

The CHP stated that the SUV’s driver, who was also its only occupant, died from his injuries.

The man’s identity will be made public by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office once it has been verified and the news of his demise is passed to his relatives.

According to the CHP, drinking seemed to have played a role in the collision. For an investigation, the Montague Expressway off-ramp from Highway 101 heading north was closed for a while.
