Massive Drug Bust In Iowa; 30,000 Fentanyl Pills Confiscated
Des Moines, Iowa: A man from Des Moines was taken into custody after being charged with federal possession of 30,000 fentanyl pills on Sunday, January 21, 2024.
A criminal complaint has been filed in the Southern District of Iowa against Sharmarke Omar Mohamed, 35. He is facing a felony drug offense of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
As part of an investigation by the Des Moines Police Department, Mohamed was discovered traveling from Arizona to Des Moines when he was pulled over by the Iowa State Patrol in Decatur County, Iowa.
Authorities discovered around 30,000 counterfeit pills believed to contain fentanyl during a search of his vehicle, conducted with a valid warrant.
Mohamed appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa is handling the prosecution of the case.
An investigation is currently underway by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Des Moines Police Department, the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Iowa State Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Ankeny Police Department, and the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force.
