Manslaughter Charges Against Officer Who Punched Oddly Behaving Senior Citizen

A 71-year-old man died in September after being struck by a former Detroit police officer during an incident; the officer is now being charged with manslaughter.

After entering a not-guilty plea and receiving a $100,000 bond, 29-year-old Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown was arrested in the 36th District Court earlier on Wednesday.

Attorneys claim that on September 1, following a “verbal confrontation” outside a bowling alley, the victim was punched. Initially, a report that Vance was acting erratically prompted the on-duty policeman to respond.

Vance struck his head as he collapsed to the floor. Three weeks later, in the hospital, he passed away.

“Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant. But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
