On April 25, a police officer shot and badly injured a man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers while responding to a domestic disturbance call.
Around 4:37 a.m., Elmira police officers were summoned to a residence in the 300 block of East Water Street for a complaint of a disturbance involving a lady yelling. According to police, cops arrived at the apartment and heard a woman screaming from within.
Officers approached the woman, who appeared to have injured her leg and was crying, police said. She said the man abused her and held her against her will inside the home.
The male, who was still at the house, disputed the allegations. Police confirmed that the woman had a valid order of protection against him.
Officers allowed the man, whose identity has not been revealed, to get some clothing from the home. While this was going on, the man retrieved what seemed to be a revolver off a bed and held it in his hand, authorities said.
Officers reportedly told the man to down his rifle and leave the room, but he refused. At the time, an Elmira police officer used a Taser on the man, which was ineffectual, and he fled inside a small closet.
According to police, the man exited the closet and pointed a weapon at officers. In response, an Elmira police officer fired a round from his own pistol, hitting the victim.
The individual was detained, treated on the scene, and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police reported that he was stable and alert. No cops were hurt.
Police said there are no further public safety issues for the area’s residents, and the disturbance was an isolated occurrence. Two blocks of East Water Street were restricted to traffic for several hours until reopening at 9:30 a.m.
The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the West Elmira Police Department, and the New York State Police all supported the Elmira Police Department on-scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials say no other information is available at this time.
