A man armed with a rifle sparked a wildfire in a northern Idaho mountain village on Sunday before opening fire on first responders, killing two and injuring a third amid a barrage of gunfire that lasted several hours, according to authorities.
A shelter-in-place order was removed Sunday night after a tactical response team utilized mobile phone data to “hone in” on a wooded area, where they discovered the suspect’s body with a pistol nearby as flames neared, according to Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris.
Officials did not divulge his identity or specify the type of firearms found.
“We do believe that the suspect started the fire, that it was an ambush, and that it was intentional,” Norris said during a Sunday night news conference. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
Sheriff’s authorities said workers responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, around 1:30 p.m., and gunshots were heard about a half hour later.
Investigators stated that the gunman acted alone.
“We believe that was the only shooter that was on that mountain at that time,” Mr. Norris added.
