A Long Island man has been charged with the gruesome act of dismembering a woman’s body and callously disposing of the remains in multiple locations in Patchogue.
Authorities in Suffolk County have announced that Gary Cowell, a 72-year-old resident of Patchogue, has been indicted on charges related to the concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence. It is alleged that Cowell dismembered the body of a 56-year-old woman from Patchogue.
“This defendant has been indicted on charges related to the alleged dismemberment of a deceased individual,” said District Attorney Tierney. “I commend the Suffolk County Police detectives for swiftly locating the victim’s remains. The investigation as to cause of death continues. We want to assure the victim’s family and the public that we are committed to pursuing justice through the proper legal process.”
As per the investigation, law enforcement received a report on June 18, 2024, about a woman who had gone missing and had not been seen since June 13, 2024.
Detectives interviewed Cowell, who was reportedly the last person to have seen the woman before her death. After the interview, Cowell accompanied detectives who discovered the dismembered remains.
Authorities reportedly found an axe and other pieces of evidence at Cowell’s residence in Patchogue. The investigation is still ongoing, and the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death as reported by FOX News.
Cowell’s court appearance is scheduled for July 25, 2024, and he is currently in custody with a $1 million cash bond.
