Man Killed His Wife, Played Dumb Front of Cops, then Confessed Killing over Cat’s Vet Care

LOWER POTTSGROVE, Pennsylvania: “At one point, Barton stated his wife said, ‘You’re killing me,’ and at some point, she went to sleep.’”

Officers in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Pennsylvania, say a murder suspect first pretended not to know how his wife died in their kitchen, but he later confessed that he was the one who killed her by beating.

A count of first- and third-degree murder is being brought against Barton Seltmann, 84.
Per a press release from Montgomery County prosecutors, authorities claimed to have received a 911 call from Seltmann on Tuesday.
Margaret Seltmann, 85, was allegedly beaten, and Seltman claimed to think she was dead. His wife was bleeding profusely from the head, and the kitchen, he said, had been looted. The statements he made were interpreted by the police as him acting as though he was unaware of her injuries.

Seltmann was waiting for them on the back porch, according to the officers. It was said that blood was on his face, hands, and clothing. Margaret was found dead inside the house. Police reported discovering a small kitchen knife with a black handle beneath the victim’s body. Furthermore, authorities reported discovering glass fragments from a shattered candle jar.

Allegedly, during an argument over the cost of their cat’s veterinary care, he claimed that his wife had taken a knife.
At the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, Seltmann is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 5.
