A 40-year-old man from Nashua grabbed a Bedford police officer’s gun and shot him in the leg in January. He has since been officially charged and will stay in jail.
Police say he resisted arrest, stole a gun from them, assaulted them with a dangerous weapon, assaulted them in the second degree, was a felon with a gun, was acting recklessly, and messed with a police dog.
The hearing for Jared Masseur was set for Wednesday in Hillsborough County Superior Court, but he did not show up. Felons with weapons were also involved in two other cases that were going to be heard.
A meeting to decide what to do is set for June 5.
Authorities in the Bedford case say that Masseur lied to police when they approached him in a 2006 tan Mercury Mountaineer that was stopped behind the Country Inn & Suites on South River Road. Masseur and a woman were told by police that they had “reasonable suspicion to investigate loitering and prowling.” The area had recently been broken into.
According to the statement, Officer Joseph Wilhelmy tased Masseur twice as he tried to run away, but it didn’t seem to work.
The gunshot hurt Officer David Benway-Fongemie, who had just started working for the police service.
K-9 Then Odin was called in to help with the claim that Masseur had put his arm around the dog’s neck.
