Kansas City, Missouri – The ATV driver who reportedly ran over a police officer in Kansas City, Missouri, is now facing prosecution.
Kendall Coleman was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal activity, and aggravated escaping a stop, Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson revealed on Wednesday.
According to court filings, on Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m., Kansas City police officers conducted a traffic stop for a group of ATVs and motorcycles at Truman Road and Main Street.
During the encounter, a KCPD officer attempted to pull over and arrest an ATV driver, later identified as Coleman.
According to court filings, Coleman reversed the ATV, forcing the officer to collapse. While the officer was bent down, Coleman pulled his ATV into a wheelie and dropped the vehicle’s front wheels onto him, running him over with all four tires before fleeing.
Officers later apprehended Coleman around 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard, but he ran again, eventually ending up on I-35, where he was driving northbound in the southbound lanes, weaving between the lanes.
According to court filings, Coleman was identified and apprehended after receiving an anonymous Crime Stoppers report.
“We will not tolerate reckless driving or attacks on law enforcement officers or members of our community,” Johnson stated in a news release Wednesday. “I am proud our community came forward to help us reveal the identity of the defendant, allowing officers to apprehend him.”
