Magic Mushrooms On The Way To Get Legal In California For Therapy
Two lawmakers from California have introduced a bill that aims to address the state’s mental health and substance use issues. The bipartisan legislation would permit individuals aged 21 and above to consume psychedelic mushrooms under the guidance of professionals.
Last year, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation that aimed to decriminalize the possession and personal use of various plant-based hallucinogens, including psychedelic mushrooms. After years of stalling, the proposal by Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener finally made it through the legislature for the first time.

In his veto message, Newsom, who advocated for the legalization of cannabis in 2016, urged lawmakers to focus on developing therapeutic guidelines and regulations.
Wiener and Republican Assemblymember Marie Waldron have joined forces on a proposal that would permit individuals to consume psilocybin, the hallucinogenic component found in psychedelic mushrooms, while under the guidance of a licensed therapist.
The bill would also cover dimethyltryptamine (DMT), MDMA, and mescaline.
Psychedelic mushrooms have been decriminalized in Colorado and Oregon, with both states implementing regulated systems for the therapeutic use of these substances. San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Cruz in California have recently implemented changes to their laws regarding the possession of psychedelic mushrooms.

As a result, individuals found with limited amounts of these plant-based hallucinogens will not face arrest or prosecution.
Personal possession and use are not permitted under the legislation. Customers are unable to purchase the item for takeaway. The drugs would remain illegal according to federal law.
Wiener expressed a sense of urgency in taking action, emphasizing the need for state lawmakers to authorize regulated psychedelic use. He drew parallels to previous efforts to legalize the therapeutic use of cannabis for cancer and HIV treatment.
