Madison to get new Rapid Route; will open for public in 2028 after $118 Million Grant from Biden’s Proposed Budget

Madison, WI: Madison’s second bus rapid transit route received $118 million in President Joe Biden’s Proposed Budget for 2025.

The Federal Transit Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation announced on March 11 that President Joe Biden’s proposed 2025 budget includes $118.1 million for the Bus Rapid Transit project in the Madison area.

The City of Madison clarified that the money for Metro Rapid Route B has not been provided yet. If the president’s budget is approved, around 78% of the route’s funding will come from it. The remaining cash will be provided by local communities that benefit from the route.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway stated that the federal investment in Madison’s north and south sides will be transformative, aiding the city’s growth in an equitable and sustainable manner.

Rapid Route B is now in the planning phase and will connect Madison’s north side to Fitchburg, following a similar path to the existing Route B.

The launch of Rapid Route B is scheduled for 2028, according to city officials.

The first phase of this project commenced with the construction of the east-west route from Junction Road to East Towne, passing through the city and campus area. It is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2024.

The latest federal money will support the second phase of the BRT project, specifically the Metro Rapid Route B, linking the north and south areas of the city, as reported by the City of Madison.

Enhanced accessibility, reduced stops, and traffic signal management will be introduced to improve efficiency on the north-south route, ultimately enhancing Madison’s transit system.
