Louisiana Deputies Behind Bars after Smuggling Contraband into Prisons; Smuggled Drugs in Hollow Pens for Inmates: Docs

New Orleans; LA: It was stated on Monday by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office that two officers of the OPSO, a former deputy, and another individual had been taken into custody and are currently facing charges in connection with an effort to bring contraband into the jail in Orleans Parish.

According to a statement that the sheriff’s office released, officer Thomya Bryant admitted to bringing four hollow ink pens that contained suboxone strips to an inmate back in the month of May.

The strippings have a worth of approximately $500.

Giona Gibson, another deputy, is suspected of carrying ten hollow ink pens that contained the strips into the jail in the month of April. According to the sheriff, Gibson had a change of heart and did not give them to an inmate before changing her mind.

The sheriff’s office has informed us that Gibson and Bryant have both been placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of the internal investigative investigation.

In connection with the provision of the medications, Dymond Smith, a former deputy, is being charged with charges of public bribery as well as criminal conspiracy. According to the sheriff, Smith was fired from his position at the sheriff’s office in December 2023 due to disciplinary offenses.

Further allegations of criminal conspiracy and public bribery have been brought against Kevin Ratliff, who is another individual.

The sheriff’s office did not give any information regarding Raliff’s involvement in the inquiry.
