Life Sentence To Police Veteran After He Intentionally Hit Police Officer During Chase in Fort Worth
Fort Worth, TX: A man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for intentionally ramming into a Fort Worth police officer during a chase.
In June 2020, Officer Matthew Brazeal was seriously injured after being struck by Ronnie Jackson. Brazeal was outside of his patrol car attempting to deploy stop sticks when he was struck.
Stop sticks, also known as spike strips, are a tool used by police officers to puncture and flatten car tires, effectively ending a pursuit. During a pursuit, an officer strategically places a device on the road just in time for the driver’s arrival.
Jackson has been convicted for the incident where he struck Brazeal, resulting in the officer being dragged for over 100 feet.
Brazeal was admitted to the hospital for an extended period and is currently in the process of recuperating from his injuries. The officer recently resumed light duty, almost four years after the incident.
Brazeal has served in the United States Army and was a three-year veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department at the time of the collision. He has prior experience as a law enforcement officer in Parker County and Weatherford.
